3 Things Cosmo Never Told You About Relationships

We spend at least eighteen years focusing on our families and the needs of our children. They come first, but now we face a new challenge because they have grown up and moved on to college, a job or another adventure. Is this a problem or an opportunity?

My initial emotional reaction to life in the empty nest was that of sadness and frankly, I felt a bit lost. However, fairly soon I realized that this is a time to shine, open new doors and to choose… me!

We can still be phenomenal moms and live an incredibly happy life when our kids have grown up and left the nest. Here are a few suggestions to help get you there:

1. It is now time for YOU!

2. One of the very biggest things you need to work on is learning how to focus on yourself. It’s all about you and your spouse or partner.

3. MAKE A LIST of everything that you love. Is it … cooking, reading, exercising, bowling, gardening, music or travel? What makes YOU happy?

4. Take that list and put it where you can see it. Look at it every day and start to contemplate your own dreams. What are YOU passionate about? What will get you up in the morning and keep you energized?

5. Dream! Dream BIG! You were so busy with your children’s dreams you forgot about yours.

6. Plan a trip to visit your child. Just knowing that this trip is planned in the future will help you a great deal.

7. Have a cocktail. (For the non-drinkers… a deep breath and a beverage)

8. Know that your child will THRIVE in college. You have given them all of the tools that they need. They can do this and they need to do it without you. THEY CAN DO THIS. DONT WORRY.

Becoming a successful Empty Nester is a work in progress. It doesn’t happen overnight, but I promise that when you enthusiastically embrace this new phase in life, you will overcome these emotional obstacles and triumph. It’s your turn now.
